About the Mission:

The family of William J. "Coach" Smith, Sr. has requested patriot Guard Riders' participation in his military honors funeral services. William, 88, passed away at home surrounded by family on December 26, 2025.

Born on May 31, 1937 in Schenectady, NY, William was a graduate of St. Columbus High School. He enlisted in the United States Army during the Cold War Era, on 30 September 1955, and served for 3 years as a Light Weapons Infantryman (MOS 11B.00). His time included 1 year and 4 months of overseas duty and he was honorably discharged at the rank of private (E-2) on 29 September 1958. He completed his Army inactive reserve duty obligation on 29 September 1961, and for his service, was awarded a Good Conduct Medal.

After serving his country, he worked for General Electric Company for over 40 years. William coached with the Jayce Little League for 40 years and St. Luke’s CYO Basketball for 35 years. He was a parishioner and usher at at St. Luke’s Church for many years.

Special Information:

Staging at the church for the arrival of family and guests. Visitation will take place from 12:00 - 1:00 pm, followed by a 1:30 Funeral mass. Escort to and interment at St. Joseph's Cemetery, 100 Kings Rd., Schenectady will follow church services.
